FILM: Love Is All You Need

Love is All You NeedAfter her latest cancer follow-up appointment, Ida (Trine Dyrholm) comes home to find her husband (Kim Bodnia) in a compromising situation with the much-younger accountant from his work. Ida’s husband is a douche, and it’s inconceivable how he could find anyone with whom to cheat, but alas, he has.

Not soon after, the incredibly warm Ida selflessly sets out to travel to Italy alone for her daughter’s wedding pretending nothing is wrong. Enter the painfully attractive and oh-so successful Philip (Pierce Brosnan) in the airport parking lot. Philip happens to be the widowed father of her daughter’s fiancé and is traveling to the wedding solo as well, but of course he has more walls up than a studio apartment converted into a Junior 4. Philip and Ida begin to navigate their hugely different personalities on their trek to the lemon orchard where their children, who are having issues of their own, are planning their nuptials.

To quote Vanilla Sky: “Without the bitter, Baby, the sweet ain’t as sweet.” Director Susanne Bier, who won the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for best foreign language film with In A Better World and also directed Things We Lost in the Fire, has captured this sentiment endearingly in Love Is All You Need.

The only thing that upstages Trine Dyrholm’s enchanting performance in the film is the breathtaking scenery. I haven’t seen a movie that made me want to visit the location so much since Mama Mia!. Not everything is up, up, up in the story, but it’s definitely a feel-good film with plenty of laughs. Most of the film is in Danish with English subtitles, but a good portion is also in English.

Love Is All You Need is now running at Lincoln Plaza and Landmark Sunshine Cinemas.
