Neon Trees’ third studio release, Pop Psychology, is exactly the new wave, synth pop-inspired dance-rock album that fans expect. Undoubtedly though, it’s their best work to date. Following the pop-rock template of the band’s hit single, “Animal,” Pop Psychology follows the unflappable verse-chorus format and features universally relatable lyrics.

Frontman Tyler Glenn pours his heart out into the most confessional set of lyrics the band has penned thus far, and layers his woes upon catchy danceable pop tunes. Since the band’s 2012 release, Picture Show, Glenn has been through therapy and come out as gay. These events are prevalent in the lyrical content of Pop Psychology, but sometimes come off as the band attempting to be too serious for their musical style.

The standout track from the record is the leading single, “Sleeping With A Friend.” The arena anthem tips its hat to Peter Gabriel, featuring incredibly catchy melodic riffs and synth lines.
