Pittsburgh-based Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers are looking deeply into the old rear view on their latest, More Yesterdays Than Tomorrow.

The title track is upbeat mid-tempo, dealing straight ahead with the idea of mortality, while “Burn us Down,” lead by Grushecky’s harmonica is a up straight bar rocker. “One Beautiful Night” is a sweet ballad about Brill Building classics and “Blood Sweat and Beers,” like  “Burn us Down,” is yet another song you can drink and hang with.

“Ain’t No Grave,” is the best for me among all these, a gospel/rocker with acoustic guitar, slide and harmonica at its base, while “Don’t Mourn For Me Like That,” ends the dozen. Again Grushecky is contemplating a heady subject but in a simple sweet way.

Joe Grushecky is from that hard working, simple songwriting east-coast truth teller school, pretty much like N.J.’s favorite son, Bruce Springsteen…who is among Joe Grushecky’s friends. More Yesterdays Than Tomorrow is tightly wound, perfectly executed and well-written and even if there are more days past then coming from this songwriter, singer, guitarist his new album is a real good time.
