The Temper Trap: The Temper Trap

Australian indie rockers hit the international scene with the success of their single, “Sweet Disposition,” years ago. With their second record, they’ve explored a bit more of the synthy dance edge that has made bands like Foals popular. While this sound makes for a pleasant album, there are moments when songs bleed together and become unmemorable.
Tracks like “London’s Burning” stand out for the clattering chaos and bellowed lyrics, which is a fitting depiction of the riots that had rocked the English capital last year. “Never Again” is punchy and energetic, while a funky beat makes “Where Do We Go from Here” stand out.
There’s certainly no fault contained within any of the other songs on the album. They’re executed with delightful precision, but I struggle to find a distinguishing element for many of them. “Rabbit Hole” begins with acoustic guitar and then builds into a broader sound, which makes it the most refreshing song on the album. More of this exploration of style and layering would have made a more remarkable sophomore effort for The Temper Trap.
