Known for her 1989 hit “All Around the World,” soul singer Lisa Stansfield continues to showcase her pipes on Seven, her first album since 2004’s The Moment. Long-positioned in the pop-soul category that influenced artists like Adele, the British singer now swings and sways in and out of musical genres as if she knows her place in the 21st century pile of singers — diversify, diversify, diversify.

Granted, Seven isn’t a Top 40 album by any means, but one can’t ignore the loveliness and versatility of Stansfield’s vocals. She’s always had a way of drawing listeners in with her smooth tone and confidence to match. Lead single “Can’t Dance” is a great introduction for newcomers to her sound as well as true-blue fans; it’s retro yet still modern. And I suppose working with husband, Ian Devaney, who’s also her long-time songwriting partner has its merits too, especially with soulful tunes like “Crown” and old cut/bonus track “You Can’t Deny It.” Overall, Seven is a solid return for the Grammy-nominated artist.
