Rejuvenated with original member/drummer Garry Peterson, singer D#, Will E. playing guitar and harp, Leonard Shaw playing keys, flute and sax, and famous heavy rock bassist Rudy Sarzo, The Guess Who (responsible for hits like “American Woman,” “No Time,” and “These Eyes”) returns with their new album, The Future IS What It Used To Be.

Mostly we get rock pop here, from the single “Playin’ On The Radio,” and the jangle of “Runnin’ Blind.” But mixed into the ten tracks are cool tunes with a little more meat than mere pop sensibilities (and don’t get me wrong, it takes real talent to write a good pop song).

There is “Baby Come Around,” an acoustic guitar, hand-clapping jumper, that stays locked right where it starts even when an electric lead comes in and most songs would go out hard and heavy, and “Haunted,” the piano ballad featuring D#’s best vocals and lyrics about cosmic matters. The Future IS What It Used To Be has some good variety to it to be sure.

Across the spectrum of who makes appearances with The Guess Who on this album, we get Styx’s Tommy Shaw, percussionist Brent Fitz, Guess Who original bassist Jim Kale, and Michael Devin of Whitesnake. You won’t be guessing about the The Guess Who once you dig into the stellar, The Future IS What It Used To Be.
