Self-proclaimed “cynical retro-Grunge rocker” Ivan Beecroft presents his latest album, Liars, Freaks & Fools.

Opening with the scary swirling electric guitar picking of “Inequality,” it is the following tune, “Deranged,” with almost Monkees-like guitar jangle verses of that really hooked me. It’s evident from the outset here we are in capable hands. Beecroft is a good songwriter, the tunes are tight little gems, and he even works his growly vocals well. To top it off, he does know how to create a singable chorus despite often heavy lyrics.

I love the brief solo bass moments and super neat guitar lead of “Shame On You,” presenting something different from the full frontal attack of the songs that came before it, a nice change. The lyric is not really much more than a repetition of the song’s title, but this halfway mark tune does groove. “The Gypsy Joker,” presents a truly rock/pop guitar riff, and again another cool groove.

“Bad Company,” reveals another great guitar riff (Beecroft certainly can play!) but the addition of cowbell, again some well-placed harmonies, and foot-tapping Foghat-styling makes this my favorite.

The balls-to-the-wall “Let it Go,” ends Liars, Freaks & Fools, probably the heaviest (yet still rock/poppy) of all the tunes. It stands out with classic rock guy-chasing-chicks lyrics which I just loved. Again Beecroft manages some perfectly picked guitar work, while the drums splash around him.

Liars, Freaks & Fools simply kicks ass.
