Singer/songwriter Yuna has long been vibrantly successful in her native Malaysia. It was after the release of her self-titled debut album that she began to experience even more recognition and critical acclaim. From the onset, it is easy to become seduced by her charming vocals and intelligently introspective lyrics. Her new album, Nocturnal, has all the attributes of pop music. It is catchy, fun, charismatic and timeless as songs dissect relationships, heartbreak, individuality, love and hope. Hints of electronica and soul abound on hypnotizing tracks like “Lights & Camera,” while a more indie rock vibe accentuates on “Mountains.” Plumes of welcoming violins decorate the woozy, beautiful mood yet energetic run of “Someone Who Can.” The song, “Escape,” is breezy, romantic and fearless, much like the rest of the album. No sense of hype is needed when the textural appeal feels this organic and unpretentious. Each track on Nocturnal feels as welcoming as the morning sun as Yuna’s quiet yet steady forage into mainstream pop music is a beautiful rebellion.
