Among the Leaves, by Sun Kil Moon, is another perfect album from Mark Kozelek, better known for his work as part of Red House Painters. If you are interested in quiet, introspective music moved forward by powerful lyrics and simple music, you won’t need to look an iota further than Among the Leaves.

For those unfamiliar, Sun Kil Moon albums always feature a sullen, quiet, reflective feeling. Often, each track will feel like a question mark for listeners to reflect upon internally. Among the Leaves is no different. The whole album is largely played on a nylon string guitar, adding to the ambient nature of the album. “Lonely Mountain” is a great example of this effect. The song is perfect for a rainy day and even better for a quiet night, sitting still with a cup of tea. “Red Poison” is still quiet but a bit more upbeat. That’s not to say that the album is sad by any means, but that the range of emotions this album takes on is grand. The track tells a story that cautions listeners to be careful about the steps they take. The album’s title track features a drumline that really brightens things up. Upbeat in tempo and sentiment, the track is friendly and sweet.

Overall, you won’t be let down by any Sun Kil Moon release, Among the Leaves in particular. The album is a rollercoaster ride of emotions that, in the end, will have you come out as a more reflective person. We promise.
