THE SEX FILES: We talk with the ‘Broom Bitch’ Yolanda Dunderdale/Madam Marvelous

“Madam Marvelous” is Yolanda Dunderdale’s super sexy, more-than-slightly dom ‘performance art’/singing/spoken work/dancing persona. “Made in Manhattan baby!!” as she says (she was actually conceived in Woodtsock, N.Y.) it’s no surprise I met Yolanda at The Curve Expo at The Javits center last week. The fetching lady says that as far as she is concerned, performance art is an “all encompassing title” that allows her freedom to change and develop her act on stage for an audience. Both the Madam and Yolanda seem to be very free spirits indeed and I had occasion to truly get to know this most provocative performer/personality as she regaled me of her new single “Broom Bitch” and all about what she and the Madam are all about. When someone comes to see you perform, what can they expect? My act includes poetry, singing, costume, improvisation, dance and comedy. I don’t box myself in one specific category of art. I mutate, and that list above will evolve with time (I’d like to include paint and contortionism in the future). And pee…for VIPs only. How does Madam Marvelous differ from you? Madam Marvelous is cunty and in control. She is the evil streak, the freak, my dark side. The hysterical, maniacal, yet desperately lovable villain.  I give her a unplaceable accent, perhaps she’s from Staten England. Yolanda is me everyday. She’s always there, even when I’m Madam.  I love people and the world from the recesses of my mind and heart and ultimately wish for the whole world to stand in love. But I move swiftly and will not tolerate SLACK in my camp….so I crack the whip freely. There is certainly a sexy, downright naughty edge to your music/persona. Can you describe where that comes from or does the song inform the ‘tude? I’ve worked the front desk of a strip club for 10 years, joking often that I’m “oversexed and underpaid.”  And I’ve often wondered myself: Did I come to work here because I’m perverted or did this place make me a pervert?!  It’s gotta be a little bit of both. I’m around sex in a very direct way a lot of the time, and this absolutely influences the words that I write and sing. Sometimes I feel like my vulgar prose is not who I truly am, but rather the regurgitation of what I witness and have witnessed in my working life. But it’s not just the clubs, we all know-don’t we?-that sex saturates almost every area of society whether it’s blatant or subliminal. I spit what I see. How did you ‘get into hip hop? Am I in hip hop? I think of it more as hip house, although I do have some hardcore rap songs. Really I do it all. Where else do your talents take you? I have a degree in fashion merchandising and business from Indiana University (I took a hiatus from the strip club for a few years to put that in my back pocket) so I do freelance sales/promotional gigs in those arenas. Additionally, I do really love to clean and so I ‘maid up’ a few houses/apartments here and there.  I literally am a Broom Bitch! Let’s talk about that song, “Broom Bitch.” I am the sole author of the lyrics. The track was produced by Young Bad Twinz (techno DJ duo transitioning from hip hop into dance, or combining the two like me). In terms of inspiration, I was staring out the window and there was a dirty old broom leaning against a concrete wall. I started to think about brooms and how they are a tool created and intended to pick up dirt, to get dirty, made to be dirty. (That’s the line: ‘I was made to be dirty’.) The whole song sprung from that inspiration. On a deeper level, the S&M theme of the song reflects my confusion and misuse of sex. I often equate sex with love, which than leaves me in pain, after learning that in fact, it is not.  Just because someone will have sex with you, it does not mean they will love you. The song is me trying to claim my pain, to own it, to play the dominant submissive, if that makes any sense. Expressing it all also helps to release it. Another interesting fact, after the song came out of me, I started researching brooms and discovered that brooms can actually be interpreted as a symbol of the unification of male and female, with the handle representing the phallic and the bristles the female pubis. What’s coming-up for you in the immediate future? Subwoofer Records will officially release the Video we shot for “Broom Bitch.” It’s a lot of fun with great costumes! A remix of “Broom Bitch” will also go along with that. My next release will be a collaboration with another hot up and comer, Sakura. It’s called “The Freaque Tekneak” and we’ve got a fun live show we’re putting together with humor and surprises. I’m also working on my solo album, tentatively called The Abstinent Constipation  or Oversexed and Underpaid. The first song I’m gonna work on is “Smokin Dick For Weed” …that’s a whole ‘nother interview, though. I look forward to it. Where can people find you?
