Grace Potter delivers an ’80s pop-rock-synth sound with her first solo effort, Midnight. Potter has always stood out in her rock band, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals; she’s a powerhouse vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and has stage presence for days, so the Vermont native was bound to record a solo album one day. (Husband, drummer and bandmate Matt Burr appears on Midnight though, as do fellow Nocturals guitarists Scott Tournet and Benny Yurco and bassist Matt Libramento.) But this project shows Grace spreading her wings as an eclectic artist, inspired by a multitude of music genres. Though radio-friendly tunes waft over Midnight in “Alive Tonight,” “Your Girl,” and “Empty Heart” (gospel choir included), rock melodies unfold just as easily with “Look What We’ve Become,” “Biggest Fan” and “Nobody’s Born With a Broken Heart.” Honestly, Midnight has something for new and old fans alike — genre-hopping, rock, pop, country, dance — it’s all here. Whether that’s a good thing for the indie rocker, it remains to be seen.
