(Carly Harpur Hollander)
Los Angeles pop/electropop artist Carly Harpur Hollanderâs new EP, Turn Down Your Mind, Open Your Eyes is a tightly woven concoction. Hollander claims her music is meant to âreflect a philosophy of resilience and unbridled positivityâ and here with these tunes she just about does exude this ethos.
âLittle Less Shyâ opens, built around a shunky drum loop with some well-placed and well-played electric rhythms and a big poppy chorus. âSatellite,â with its quieter âplinkyâ key sounds, follows, providing more welcome space where it is just Hollanderâs sweet vocal against the keys until once again she slips in a big singable chorus of âah ah ahâs,â and the beat gets jumping for her dance fans.
âGame Faceâ utilizes swirly keys and plumping bass for one of the more kinetic runs on the EP. Hollander rap-singing over this song is lots of fun and feeds right into a jam with her vocals and the bass at about the 2:30 mark, extending the tune into a more obvious dance track than any other she presents here.
The last tune âDonât Turn Off the Nightâ is the best for me. Itâs got a desperate sadness underlying what I feel is the best key layering, and lyrics that makes you feel youâre standing right next to Hollander as she probes her place in the big city.
Carly Harpur Hollander Turn Down Your Mind, Open Your Eyes is solid dance-able pop stuff.
